How Does Man Become Blind?

In all over the world about 14 million people are blind. Blindness is of many types. Some people are totally blind whereas the others are blind to some extent. Some people are blind by birth whereas others lose their sight slowly over the years. The people who are blind by birth are less in number in comparison to those who become blind after birth.

We do not know all the causes for the inborn blindness. But one thing is sure that the foetus becomes blind in the womb due to some diseases from which the mother is suffering. Blindness of foetus can be caused, if the mother is suffering from a serious venereal disease which is known as ‘gonorohea’. The eyes of the foetus in the womb fail to develop properly if the mother is suffering from ‘syphills’. Inborn blindness is also caused by diseases of the retina, the visiual centres of brain and the optic nerves. Trachoma, cataract and glaucoma are the main causes for the blindness developing after birth. Trachoma is caused by a virus and it is a dangerous disease. The patient’s vision damages as hard pustules develop on the inner surface of the eyelids. Now antibiotics are available for the treatment of this disease. The man suffering from cataract disease slowly loses the eyesight and finally becomes blind. With the help of surgery we can cure this disease. The eye ball become hard and pressure on optic nerves increases in case of glaucoma. The eyesight is also reduced by this disease. Some other diseases like tuberculosis, diphtheria, diabetes; meningitis etc also weakens the eyesight. One can lose eyesight during accidents. To maintain proper eyesight, it is necessary to keep the eyes clean.
