Is your computer:
Crashing when you try to open certain software?
Slow to start up and shut down?
Having trouble booting?
If so, your problem might be a bloated registry. The registry is a central storage file in Windows operating systems. It was created to fuse INI files that use to store information and configurations for each individual program which made it hard to find and manage files. When you install software the settings and configurations are saved in the registry. A clean registry is essential to the Windows operating system. Problems occur because some of those settings will be left behind when you uninstall any software. The data starts to pile up causing bloat. If there is a system crash or unexpected shut down, files can also be left behind in the registry, clogging it even more because the operating system can’t detect these entries.
Malware can also cause bloat. Malware is software that installs itself in the registry unknown to you, so it can collect data about your computer. It automatically starts with your system and purposely leaves information in the registry to hide the fact that it is there.
The first thing you need to do to fix your registry is to scan your computer for the malware using security software. Good firewalls, antivirus, and antispyware are easy to find for free online. Make sure the security software is up-to-date then scan for the malware.
Once the malware is gone you can work on fixing the registry. You will need special software such as registry scanners, cleaners and defragmenters that can help you fix your registry and can be found for free on the internet. Two examples are Wise Registry Cleaner and Tweak Now. These types of software will go through a series of steps to repair your registry.
They clean the system by checking all the entries and deciding whether they are needed by the operating system or any other software. If there is any damage or corruption it will be repaired, and the registry will be defragmented. Fragmentation slows down the computer because it increases the file size as items are added and deleted. The cleaning software will also create a backup file which can be beneficial if anything happens to the new registry.
Once everything is cleaned, repaired and defragmented, you should make sure to run your security software on a regular basis to keep new malware from installing on your computer especially if you download anything from online. Continue to use the registry cleaning software to keep your registry healthy.
Registry bloat is not the only cause of system problems. If problems continue, you may need to reformat your system or re-install the operating system.
