How To Get Rid Of iPod Scratches?

A few years ago most of us didn’t know what an iPod was, much less how to get rid of iPod scratches. But this is a real problem for fans of this electronic device. Fortunately, there are some things you can do to take care of scratches like this.

If the plastic body has a light scratch on it you can take care of the lighter scratches with a very fine abrasive made specifically for this purpose. Talk with a reliable expert at your electronics store about these items. With this in hand, get a chamois cloth and apply a small amount to the scratched area. Vary your rubbing direction (circular, horizontal etc.) A company aptly named Applesauce makes products for this specific purpose. Check out one of their kits for removing scratches.

You will probably have to spend about $20 but you will get a polish for those lighter scratches and a product that will actually glaze over some of the heavier scratches. People who have used this product say it is good for touching up the surface. It seems to make the iPod surface look much better, if only in a general way.

Big Job
For bigger scratches you may need to turn to a product called Scratch Out (from KIT). This is available at most hardware stores and at auto-supply stores. Be careful when using a product from another manufacturer because there are no guarantees with these items. However, if you use a good chamois and some careful rubbing you may get rid of some heavier scratches. In the worst case scenario you may have to replace the casing. Sometimes the scratches are just too deep and can’t be repaired or removed.

Ipod ScratchesIf the scratches are on the screen you will need to address the situation a bit differently. You can use a commercial product designed for cleaning eyeglasses. Make sure you have the right kind of cleaning cloth so you don’t create more scratches instead of removing them. This will take care of the lightest marks and smudges. For slightly heavier scratches you might try a rubbing compound such as the one by KIT mentioned above.

Small Job
Talk with a staff member at the local cell-phone store. Some companies make cleaning products for mobile/cell phone screens. These may work on your iPod as well. Lighter scratches can be removed with this item and a soft cleaning cloth.

In addition to the commercial rubbing compounds mentioned you might be able to clean up some mild scrapes and marks with an all-purpose cleaner that is already in your cabinet. These can help with scratches on the casing but you should probably avoid using them on the screen. A product for cleaning optical glass might be better for that.

Two other methods involve a metal-cleaning solution and spray paint. If you get to this point, your iPod has some serious scratches. Give it a try, a little spot at a time. If the scratches are too deep you may have to buy a new case.
