How To Get Rid Of Itches?

We have to start the process of getting rid of itches by understanding what causes us to itch in the first place. This is important whether we have an occasional itch or there is some more long-term, consistent cause for our itches.

From the start, we should make an effort not to scratch the itch, unless it’s just a minor “tickle” on the surface of the skin. Everyone gets these. But if the itch is caused by a more serious skin condition or insect bite we should avoid scratching. This will only spread the toxin, bacteria or whatever is causing the problem.

Since our skin has millions of tiny nerve endings we will probably have to pay attention to an area around the place that itches. Use an over-the-counter lotion or cream designed to stop the itch and sooth mild inflammation. But this only treats the symptoms, especially if an allergy is causing us to itch on a regular basis.

Is it Your Clothes?
ItchGive some thought to the type of material in your clothing. Is it possible that these fabrics are making you itch by irritating the skin? Is there something in the laundry detergent, hand soap or bath soap that makes you itch? If either of these might be the problem, make some changes in your washing habits and see if another type of clothing gives you some relief. You may well be allergic to a particular food item that causes you to itch consistently. Talk to your doctor about possible sources for this problem. You may need to take a prescription, oral antihistamine.

If your itches are generally all over your arms or legs or another large area of the body you may be suffering from dry skin. Lack of moisture in the body and in the skin is a common cause of itching. Make sure you drink enough water each day and use moisturizing lotions and creams as directed. This should put an end to minor itches caused by low moisture levels in the skin.

Home Remedies
Some home remedies for dry skin and itching: oil made from the kernel of an apricot; hydrocortisone creams are excellent for stopping itches on irritated skin and minor scrapes; cornstarch/water paste or store-bought toothpaste for bug bites that itch; lemon juice can help relieve itching from bug bites or ivy rashes.

In addition to the many new creams and lotions (including hydrocortisone cream) the traditional treatment for many skin itches is calamine lotion. This is a temporary fix but it does stop some of the itching sensation and soothes the skin. Finally, you may want to try a substance that is widely used to cool sun-burned skin – Aloe Vera. This natural substance is often found in gels and lotions that are sold for soothing itching, sensitive skin. Aloe Vera has also been found to reduce inflammation significantly and act against bacteria or fungi that might be causing the itch. This may be the best answer for itches that aren’t caused by a more serious health condition.
