How To Get Rid Of Nits?
Anyone who has had experience getting rid of lice knows about “nits.” Parents and teachers have struggled with preventing head lice and getting rid of lice. The battle includes preventing lice from maturing and infecting the body by getting rid of the eggs (nits).
First and foremost, don’t deny that your children have lice or nits. A child may be excessively clean and have no lice or nits when they leave for school. That same child may come home with nits or lice that have migrated from another pupil at the school. The most important thing to do when you see eggs or lice is to take steps to get rid of them. Don’t waste time worrying and denying.
No Poison
Commercial products are available to get rid of lice. The problem with these is that they often strong chemicals to kill lice and eggs. The chemicals work well. But they can damage sensitive skin, especially on children. Some of the earlier products used chemicals that have since been banned. They weren’t even allowed on farm crops and weeds! Newer products available over the counter aren’t quite so toxic. If you use them make sure you follow the directions carefully and exactly.
It’s not difficult to kill lice and get rid of nits if you do it the correct way. You don’t even have to use chemical bug killers. Just go to the store and buy a jar of real mayonnaise. Don’t put it in the refrigerator when you get home. Use it at room temperature. Use it like a lotion or shampoo and cover the child’s head, neck and skin behind the ears. Put a plastic shower cap on the child’s head to keep the mayonnaise from dripping on the floor and furniture. Leave it on for a couple of hours. Then simply shampoo the child’s head thoroughly and away the dead lice and nits! Vaseline will work too, but you’ll have to use baby oil and a lot of shampoo to get the hair clean. The idea is to smother the little fellows!
Buy Something
In recent years companies have manufactured some shampoo products that are easier on the hair than the older items that used strong chemicals. Shop carefully and you may find a shampoo that will get rid of the lice for you. You can also make your own shampoo from natural products. Use olive oil and coconut oil with shampoo. The oils kill lice by dissolving their bodies. After a regular shampoo treatment you can get rid of the nits by rinsing the scalp and hair with vinegar. This should loosen up the grip of the nits. Rinse the hair again with very warm water. Finish the process with a nit comb that you should be able to purchase from your pharmacy or health-product store. Don’t stop until you can’t see nits. If you have to pick them out of the hair with your fingers, do it! You’ll be glad you did.
