How To Get Rid Of Old Clothes?

The first word that should come to mind when you think about how to get rid of old clothes: donate. If you have items of clothing that don’t fit because you gained or lost weight, consider giving them away. If your clothes no longer fit your lifestyle or type of work, pack them up and take them to one of the many charitable organizations.

If you are the type of person who wants to keep things “local” and you aren’t concerned about making money selling your old clothes, talk to someone at one of the local churches. Chances are a church group is collecting used clothing or will be in the near future. If the church isn’t involved in clothing collection at this time, someone there might be able to direct you to a non-profit organization that does take clothing.

Salvation Army, Goodwill
Most people are familiar with organizations like the Goodwill store, the Salvation Army or a church-related second hand store. All of these are good destinations for old clothes. When you are going to donate clothing keep in mind that the items must be clean, unstained and very usable. Most organizations and second-hand stores display these items and sell them for very low prices. But this doesn’t mean you can give them shirts and pants that are little more than rags. They don’t want to handle a lot of clothing that isn’t suitable for resale. If you dump a lot of unusable items on their doorstep you are simply creating work for the volunteer staff members.

Old ClothesMoney for Clothing
Of course, you don’t have to get rid of old clothes without getting something in return. If you have shirts, pants, shoes and coats that your children have outgrown, or if you need to clear out some closet or attic space, consider selling your clothing items. As with donations, it is important to offer only clean, unstained items that other people will want to buy.

List your clothes in the local newspaper, on Internet classified-advertising Web sites or with online auction sites. When it comes to setting a price, keep your expectations reasonable. You may think you can get top price for good, used clothing but you will probably find that a couple of dollars is about all most of the items are worth. For example, a name-brand sport coat in excellent condition can be purchased at Goodwill or other second-hand stores for $5 to $10 in some areas.

In addition to selling clothing on your own, or donating the items to a charity or church group, you may be able to place some of the clothing with a consignment seller. These locations may be rare, in comparison to second-hand stores, but they can be good places to offer your used clothing. You may also want to consider having a swap party with neighbors, friends and family members. This can be a great way to have fun and move some old clothes at the same time. You may also want to include clothing in your yard sale or garage sale. That’s a great way to get rid of old clothes.
