How to Get Rid of Pockmarks?

A majority of people battle some sort of skin condition, acne or pimples. While these problems are often a common part of growing up and becoming an adult, there are more serious situations that need to be addressed. One of these problem conditions is the presence of pockmarks on the skin (especially the face). This condition can cause a person to become self-conscious to an unhealthy degree and may even prevent the individual from mixing socially.

So what can be done to get rid of unsightly pockmarks? Most guidelines for treatment begin by using a process called exfoliation. But what is exfoliation? Most of us have heard of it through advertisements of various kinds. Many of our friends have talked about it and even used it. Exfoliation is a natural process in which the dry or dead skin flakes off or peels off of the surface. We can speed up this process and use it as a treatment – a thorough, gentle scrubbing or rubbing action on the affected area. This facial scrubbing stimulates skin cells to regenerate. The results can be dramatic in some cases.

In recent years, pharmaceutical companies have developed creams and lotions intended for scar treatment. After all, pockmarks are scars of a specific type. They are pits in the skin, areas that won’t easily grow back or repair to the normal condition without some help. Some of these creams help change the color of the skin by slightly altering the pigmentation. The pockmarks then blend with the rest of the skin more than they will without these creams. Many people report noticeable changes in a couple of months.

PockmarksOne of the more aggressive methods for getting rid of pockmarks is laser treatment. This remarkable type of light actually burns away a top layer or two of skin, reducing the depth of pockmarks or eliminating some of the shallower ones altogether. Human skin is very resilient and will generally recover nicely from laser treatment and become much more smooth and appealing to the eye.

Some people have tried the chemical route – using specific chemicals carefully applied by a medical professional. This method has about the same result as laser treatment, in that the top layers of skin are removed to reveal smoother “new” skin below. Many pockmarks only go as deep as these top layers so they can be removed with the skin. It is also possible to smooth the skin with a process called abrasion. In essence, you are smoothing the skin by buffing it as you would any other surface. This method requires repeated sessions to achieve noticeable results.

Some of the other suggested programs for getting rid of pockmarks:

Application of a silicone product that can help remove scar tissue. This long-term method requires time and patience.

Cocoa butter helps smooth the skin and add moisture. Apparently the skin becomes much more flexible (elastic) and stretches to reduce pockmarks.

Topical creams and onion extract have been used as well. It may help to learn more about how some of these natural items can have a positive effect on skin condition.
