How to Get Rid of Scars?
You may wear some of your scars as badges of honor, proudly showing them, telling anyone who will listen the entire story of how those scars came to be. But there may also be scars that aren’t displayed with pride and may even be the cause of embarrassment. The question regarding these latter scars is, “What should we do about them?”
We all have small scars from physical activity, surgeries, touching a hot surface and many other causes. We may have lived with these for years and have finally decided to do something about getting rid of them. But what can be done to remove scar tissue permanently?
Do it Now
The earlier we start taking care of wounds and injuries the better. This is quite true of scars that result from those wounds and injuries. Not only will the injury heal well but early and proper treatment may reduce the scar tissue. We have to focus on limiting the evidence, so to speak. Wounds should be well cleaned then covered to keep the area moist. An exposed wound is a dry wound and dry conditions contribute to the formation of scar tissue. It’s important to protect the injured area from sunlight. Too much direct sun will cause drying and change the pigmentation (color) of the skin.
One of the important steps in healing wounds and preventing scar tissue is this: gentle massage. However, most people don’t know about this. If they do they don’t think about it or take it seriously. But gently massaging the area around the wound stimulates blood circulation.
This contributes to efficient healing and can limit the formation of dead tissue. If the scar has already started to form, you can press lightly on the scar tissue and then move out, massaging in every direction.
Can I Buy Something?
Some people may put a lot of faith in creams and lotions that are presented as “guaranteed” to help prevent or get rid of scars. But most of them aren’t the miracle methods the advertisements claim they are. There hasn’t been a lot of good research on these products but most of the studies show that the massaging that accompanies the application of creams and lotions does as much good as the product itself.
In addition, the moisture that is added to the injured area has as much effect on the healing process as any other ingredient. This is also true of silicon treatments, though this type of patch or cream has to be on the scarred area for several hours to have any effect. The best method for removing a scar involves calling in the pros. An experienced dermatologist can use laser treatment to create a smoother skin surface or surgically remove the dead tissue.
Keep in mind that scars form to protect the injured, healing area. While you can limit the formation of scar tissue with early treatment and massage, the best method might be a proper covering that keeps the tissue alive and moist. This keeps scar tissue from forming in the first place.
