How to Get Rid of Sinus Headache ?
There are several types of headaches – migraines, cluster, hangover/dehydration; sinus….the list is long. Sinus headaches are slightly different in that they are characterized by an ache in the front part of the head and a pain in the facial area that is sometimes described as “dull” as opposed to the sharp pains that come with some other types of headache.
The reason for this difference is that the sinus cavities are supposed to be air-filled under normal circumstance. These spaces are in the skull around the eyes, nose and upper cheek area. When there is inflammation in this area or when the cavities are filled with fluid, we can experience serious pain. This pain is often a throbbing sensation that gets worse when we lean over, bend down or move the head quickly. Certain changes in weather can also make the symptoms worse.
To figure out if you are suffering from sinus headaches, look for one, two or more of these symptoms: areas of the face (around eyes and nose, for example) are tender; you feel pressure and pain (often behind your eyes); going outside when it is cold increases the pain; headaches are worse in the morning and seem to get “better” as the day goes on. Noticeable symptoms include drainage from the nose and a feeling of being “stuffed up.”
Sinus headaches are caused by congestion and inflamed sinus cavities, as mentioned earlier. In fact, the inflammation and congestion is a secondary step that may have started with an infection in the respiratory system or with an allergy to some substance or atmospheric condition. The sinus cavities don’t remain 100 percent air-filled and open. Fluids and mucous will move through and drain from the sinuses on an occasional basis. This occurs even in the healthiest person.
But when there is infection, strong inflammation and swelling, the cavities get full and the passages are blocked. There will be pain and aches that we call sinus headaches. This blockage is a perfect place for bacteria and other unhealthy organisms to grow. Sinus headaches might be the first level, one that is followed by more serious health problems. This condition should not be treated lightly.
Most doctors will tell patients that the best way to eliminate a sinus headache is to strike at the source of the inflammation and blockage. This may take prescription antibiotics. Some doctors may prescribe a treatment that involves corticosteroids to reduce inflammation. Remedies that might be used with care include nasal passage irrigation, changing the humidity levels in the home and taking specific supplements or herbs that can provide relief.
Some people find that allergies cause sinus congestion, headaches and inflammation. Antihistamines can help you deal with these allergies but are generally for short-term/temporary relief. Changes in diet can sometimes provide relief, especially if the inflammation and fluid build-up is due to food allergy. Some people have even resorted to surgery when their sinus headaches don’t respond to other methods. Doctors may be able to enlarge the sinus openings, for example.
