How to Get Rid of Teen Depression?

One of the “epidemics” that concerns parents, government leaders and social workers alike is teen depression. It just seems that young people should realize that they are living the best years of their lives. Teenagers just shouldn’t be depressed.

But the truth of the matter is that young people, especially teenagers, are often the victims of depression, a condition that is now recognized as a real and serious medical affliction. While it isn’t always possible to anticipate depression, there are early warning signs. There are also some ways to deal with teen depression, reduce its effects and even get rid of it in some cases.

Stress and Worry
Depression is now recognized as a chemical/physical ailment, though it was thought to be only a mental condition at one time. New studies and medical experience shows that the pressure of being a teenager – school, parents, hormonal changes etc. – can trigger true depression. Rapid changes in emotions and thoughts may even lead to thoughts of worthlessness and suicide.

It is important for parents and friends to recognize warning signs of depression in teenagers. In general, teenagers shouldn’t show signs of hopelessness. If a young person is consistently expressing ideas about being worthless or reacts in the extreme when criticized, these may be signs that depression is in their future. If a teenager has generally been energetic and has shown interest in school and friends, then changes in a relatively short time, this too may indicate future problems.

What Can Be Done?
Family members and friends can encourage a teenager to focus on getting plenty of rest. A good night’s sleep is the best way to begin addressing teen depression. People who avoid the light of day may be contributing to their own depression without realizing it. It’s best to get out into the sun occasionally and interact with others whenever possible.

Teen DepressionPeople have known for years that physical activity and exercise stimulates endorphins in the human body. This will make almost anyone feel better. Someone who may be feeling down and seems to be disinterested in life can make some giant strides through exercise and being active. It may be enough to go for a walk, dance with friends or do some simple exercises.

Diet is one of the factors that many people ignore when they suspect depression. It’s good to avoid friend foods and food with high sugar content. Fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grain bread and cereal will be much better for you. In addition to these self-help ideas, it is important to contact your doctor immediately. It may be possible to treat teenage depression with prescription medications. As we mentioned earlier, depression is now recognized as a physical/chemical malady that can be treated with specific medications. Serotonin reuptake inhibitors, tricyclic antidepressants and monoamine oxidase inhibitors are among the modern medicines used to correct deficiencies that lead to the depressive state in the human body.

Teen depression should never be taken lightly. You should start to deal with this frightening condition as soon as you suspect problems.
