How to Get Rid of Teeth Grinding?
Grinding your teeth is a sure way to cause serious dental and health problems. So, it may be a good idea to find out why we grind our teeth and what we can do to stop this habit.
That’s just what it is too – a habit. If you find yourself grinding your teeth on a regular basis it is a good bet that you have been doing it for awhile. You probably have but don’t realize it.
You Can Stop This!
There may be a number of causes for teeth grinding, whether this happens at night or at any other time. You should find out what is causing you to grind your teeth, of course, but you shouldn’t wait to discover the cause before doing something. The earlier you take some steps to break this habit the better because delay may lead you to serious health issues.
The first thing you may want to do is use one of those simple mouth guards that will prevent your upper teeth from contacting the lower teeth. Even if you attempt to grind your teeth unconsciously the plastic or rubber guard will prevent excessive wear on the teeth. This is important because as you continue to grind your death you are opening the door to disease.
Why Do People Grind Their Teeth?
Some people are driven to grind their teeth because of physical problems. When individuals feel uncomfortable or feel pain because of lack of nutrients, for example, this may be a physical stimulus that leads to teeth grinding as a nervous habit.
There may be situations in which a person feels extreme stress because of some situation in their lives. Extreme anxiety and nervousness may lead to grinding the teeth as the person attempts to release some of the frustration and energy that is building up.
If a person doesn’t fall asleep in a short time or does doze off but sleeps fitfully he or she might grind their teeth to release the same frustration and energy that they feel when awake. This may be one symptom of a sleep disorder that can threaten our health. Finally, some people may really have problems with teeth, gums or jaw alignment that is relieved by teeth grinding or constant movement of the jaws. If you can eliminate any of the situations mentioned or work to reduce something specific that is causing stress you may be on the road to getting rid of teeth grinding.
Acknowledge the Habit
Try to “catch” yourself grinding your teeth. When it starts, grab something to munch on that will replace the grinding. An apple or a carrot can be great for this. Some people find that the simple act of taking a hot bath and consciously relaxing does the trick. Remember, a lot of teeth grinding is the result of stress and anxiety.
If you grind your teeth at night and when you are asleep you should immediately cut out all caffeinated drinks such as coffee and soda pop. Drink an herbal tea or even a small amount of milk. Finally, you may find some relief with calcium supplements and deep-breathing. When you find yourself in a nervous state that might lead to teeth grinding, stop and focus on taking a few deep breaths. This may be enough to get rid of teeth grinding.
