How to Get Rid of Telemarketers?
Start getting rid of telemarketers from the beginning by putting your phone number on the no-call list. You can reduce the number of calls from telemarketers in most cases and sometimes eliminate these calls altogether.
In recent years, government agencies have compiled do-not-call lists. The United States government and some other nations have made these lists available. You simply need to register your home phone number and cell phone number so that companies do not call you.
Exceptions to the Rule
Having your numbers listed on “official” no-call lists doesn’t stop all contact from businesses, however. If you have been doing business with some out-of-town businesses in the past they will be able to continue contacting you. If you have been a customer of businesses in the past you will probably be contacted in the future. In addition, you cannot necessarily stop calls from charitable organizations. In addition, political parties will probably continue to contact you. This will probably be true of some pollsters and others connected with the political process as well.
Some people have even tried a bit of trickery to get rid of telemarketers. This may be accomplished by using a recording of the “number out of service” message. If telemarketers hear this when they dial your number they may be discouraged enough to avoid dialing you in the future. They might just take you off their call list.
This tricky method may not keep telemarketers from contacting you forever, but it can be a way to stop phone calls for the time being. Be sure that you let family members and friends that the recorded message will be there.
Legally
Some individuals will use formal or legal means to keep businesses from calling them and disturbing their dinner or evening. Attorneys will often use a cease-and-desist order to get creditors to stop calling clients. This may also work with telemarketing companies. You may be able to achieve this by calling the company. Of course, you will have to obtain the correct phone number first.
It’s simple to identify who is calling if you have the caller identification (caller ID) feature on your phone. If you see a number you don’t recognize you don’t have to answer. In fact, it might help to keep in mind that the telephone is there for you and your purposes. It’s not for telemarketers. They don’t pay for your phone privileges.
There is one other way to discourage a telemarketer if you have answered the phone and the person has started his rehearsed presentation. Ask questions about their name, their company’s name, the product or service they are selling and so on. If you can gain control of the conversation you may be able to get to the point of ending the call rather quickly.
