How to Get Rid of Textbooks?

Textbooks are an important part of educational systems around the world, even in the age of computers and Internet information. Unless there is some miracle of change in the near future students will continue to use textbooks for at least some of their study.

But there comes a time in the life of all textbooks when the information no longer applies to the current state of the world. In some cases, publishers decide that a few details need to be added to the text and this prompts a new edition. (Whether money is the prime motivation behind this is another subject altogether.)

Life Expectancy of Textbooks
When students use textbooks outside of the classroom they have access to detailed information about a subject. But even the best of textbooks reaches the end of its useful life or someone decides that the “old” editions are taking up too much room. It wouldn’t make sense to store all these books in warehouses and spare rooms on school property or private property. So we have to find ways to get rid of textbooks.

One of the best methods of getting rid of textbooks is through donation. Some organizations can use textbooks that aren’t too “out of date.” Others might find these books to be great sources of material for recycling. A few minutes of research will uncover groups that are looking for used textbooks. Many of these organizations have Web sites. Some educational institutions simply don’t have the resources to buy new textbooks and will gladly accept past editions. Check with E-Campus, Book Byte and other organizations that work with textbooks on a regular basis.

Where Else?
Smaller colleges and new institutions of higher learning are often eager to accept textbooks that might contain still-applicable information. Contact local colleges, private education programs etc. to see if they might accept textbooks you no longer need.

TextbooksNearly everyone has developed the habit of recycling aluminum cans, glass and other materials. But did you know that there are some groups and organizations that will take textbooks? Not only can you help preserve a few trees you might put a few dollars in the bank account of a recycling company that needs the revenue. Ask your local trash-pickup company if they know of a location that accepts old textbooks. Look in the yellow pages of your phone book for recycling groups and organizations.

Of course, there is always the “profit” route for getting rid of textbooks. Sometimes you can find a place that will actually pay you for unneeded books. Schools are a possibility, as are students who can’t afford the newest addition. Libraries sometimes seek out past editions that can fill out their collections.

If you want to get creative with your old textbooks you might be able to use the materials for crafts. Some people use textbook materials to start their fireplace or woodstove. When it comes to old textbooks all you have to do is use your imagination, instead of letting those old books take up space and gather dust.
