How To Get Rid Of Water Spots On Windows?

For several decades, people have watched television commercials about getting water spots off of dishes that have been in a dishwasher. It may not be quite so common to think about getting water spots off of the windows around your house. Some people already know some home remedies for this and others just don’t give it much thought.

Using water from the faucet inside or outside the house is efficient and cheap. But water systems bring hard water to our homes. What is hard water? The life-giving liquid we need every day contains trace amounts of dissolved chemicals like magnesium or calcium. When the liquid dries on any surface it leaves behind deposits of these chemicals that show up as spots or white streaks.

Easy Fix
You can have clean windows and no water spots if you take a few simple steps before starting to wash the glass. In fact, you probably already have what you need in the cabinet or pantry. Combine white vinegar and water (one part water, two parts vinegar) and use it in a spray bottle after your normal window-washing process. The vinegar will dissolve the chemical traces left behind. Spray the mix on and let it sit for a couple of minutes. With a soft cloth or a clean sponge, wipe the window down.

You can always use a commercial product like Windex. However, even the best item from the store might not be strong enough to remove older, tougher water spots. This is where vinegar comes in. Even with the best mixture of vinegar and water you may have to put a little effort into your window scrubbing.

Some Great Ideas
Water Spots on WindowsIf you have tried the vinegar/water mixture and removed most of those water spots on your windows you will probably be pleased with your results. But if a few stubborn spots remain you may want to try this last idea. Scrub those remaining spots gently with a bit of steel wool. Be careful not to scratch the window surface. You will probably have to start with a gentle rubbing and gradually increase the pressure until the spots disappear. Steel wool breaks up the mineral deposits so they can fall away or be wiped away.

Another great suggestion: Try that steel wool, a Brillo pad or SOS pad in combination with some cleaner designed for the oven top. This should break up the calcium deposits and provide you with a clear, sparkling window. When your goal is a perfectly clean window, washing with tap water and soap is not going to be enough. You’ll probably have to take one of the extra steps mentioned above. We usually have the ingredients we need.
