How To Get Rid Of White Heat Stains On Wood?
You may think that an item of wood furniture is ruined when the surface is unintentionally marked by heat from some object. But there are a couple of great methods for getting rid of heat stains on wood. These generally have a white or light appearance and can be the source of anguish and frustration.
However, some of the folks who have tried home remedies report wonderful results. For example, you might be able to get rid of most of this damage using nothing more than a cotton cloth or T-shirt and your good, old steam iron. Other methods that have been used with mixed results (but generally positive) are cigarette ash, toothpaste and mayonnaise. Simply place a small amount of mayonnaise on a paper towel or small cloth. Press the area lightly. Leave the mayonnaise on the surface for a few minutes if necessary. You may even try adding a small amount of baking soda to the mayonnaise. Be careful not to damage the surface.
Like Ironing
The T-shirt and iron process involves putting the shirt on the marked surface and applying the iron with gentle pressure. This loosens the wax or other finish slightly. With the iron on the low setting, fold the cotton T-shirt so you have a double thickness of material between the iron and the furniture surface. Place the shirt over the stained area. Move the iron across the shirt, back and forth, as if you were pressing the shirt. You can even give the marked area a hit of steam with the steam button on the iron (through the shirt of course).
Then simply lift up the shirt and see if your efforts had any effect. The deepest heat stains may not come up with this simple method. But many marks created by a hot dish or other object can be removed with the iron and T-shirt process. Of course, deeper burns that reach the wood are another story altogether.
White heat stains on wood are primarily made up of moisture that collects between the varnish or lacquer and the wood. This can be viewed as a bubble of moisture trapped between two surfaces. Using steam and heat carefully applied through the soft cotton shirt you may release this bubble of moisture and air, essentially removing the stain.
This method isn’t guaranteed to work with every heat stain on wood. But there are few other home remedies that will take care of damage to wood furniture. It’s worth a try.
