What is a Liquid Lens?
A simple version of a liquid lens is a water drop which drips off from the condensation on a cold soda and causes the magnification of whatever object is present under it. So, in order to provide the magnification of an object, the properties of two different liquids present within a small space are utilized by a liquid lens. As oil and water do not mix and are inexpensive and safe, they are considered perfect for a liquid lens. To make a liquid lens, two pieces of clear plastic or glass are used and within them, a mixture of oil and water is sandwiched. A cheap and light liquid lens can be created in this way.
In a liquid lens A bubble shape is formed as the water adheres to plastic or glass. Variable focus and magnification is created because of the shape of the water bubble which forms inside the liquid lens. The rest of the space is taken up by the oil which prevents the movement of the water inside the lens.
The liquid lens technology can be useful in any gadget that requires a light and small lens. The liquid lens technology is used by small digital cameras, camera-equipped mobile phones and in various other electronic devices. Apart from cost and weight savings, a flawless lens is created because of the presence of water. The liquid lens changes its focus in the same way as the lens of the human eye which changes its focus by making changes in its shape. The focal length of the camera can be changed by altering the shape and size of the water drop present inside the liquid lens. This is not possible in a standard lens as its shape cannot be changed and it needs to be replaced whenever a change of focal length is required.
There are a wide variety of applications in which the liquid lens is used because of its small size, light weight and low cost. Soon liquid lenses will be used in laptops that have in-built webcams.
But a liquid lens also has a serious disadvantage. The water in its lens tends to freeze at very low temperatures thus damaging the lens. So, in very cold weather, one should be careful while using a camera or a mobile phone with an in-built liquid lens.
