What Is A Pow Wow?
To some, the term “pow-wow” might have some almost comical meaning or might seem like a term created for movies or cartoons. But the truth is that “pow-wow” actually comes from the Narragansett people. The original word was “powwaw” and it referred to a leader who was responsible for spiritual advice and matters among the population.
The term has gradually transformed over the years until it now represents a gathering of people who visit, talk seriously, sing and dance. All of the activity is meant to honor the culture of Native Americans. According to historical records and encyclopedia information, pow-wows among North American populations might last from one day to a week, depending on the purpose of the gathering.
At some point in United States history, the term “pow-wow” was applied to a meeting between Native American people and government or military representatives. This is a matter of some debate among the country’s original people, as the Native Americans were often viewed in an inferior light during these meetings.
One of the most fascinating facts about a pow-wow is that preparations are seldom if even left to chance. Plans are very specific and the process of planning may begin a year ahead of the gathering.
Native American populations and native residents of other countries usually form a committee of leaders to put together the “agenda” for a pow-wow. Many gatherings were planned by groups of leaders in the 1800s and early 1900s. The major difference today is the existence of rather formal “committees” given the task of planning a pow-wow.
Committee members now conduct much of the planning as they would a temporary business. There are decisions to make about food sales and items of interest that might be offered to those in attendance. The committee might hire one or more individuals to take charge of the planning and pow-wow arrangements, though this position might exist only until the conclusion of the important gathering.
In earlier times, a person was honored to be chosen to plan the pow-wow or to be in charge of any part of the event. This holds true today, though there is some professionalism associated with the job that might not have existed in the distant past. In fact, recent records show that there are some very specific positions associated with the modern pow-wow, such as the director of all events that take place in the main arena or activity area. This director oversees the singing and dancing activities.
But pow-wows also have one person who is at the center of the action and introduces or announces various activities. In essence, this individual acts as a master of ceremonies. Dancers and drum groups have their own leaders, who take their responsibilities very seriously, because the pow-wow is such an important part of the culture of native people.
In summary, the term “powwaw” was once applied to an individual with certain abilities or spiritual character. People would gather around this man for specific reasons. However, the term “pow-wow” is now associated with gatherings that are social and political in nature, and occupy a very important spot on the calendar.
