What Is A Steadicam?

In a motion picture camera, a device that acts as a stabilizing mount is known as steadicam. Steadicam is really useful in capturing a shot which involves action, without any unwanted jerky movements or any out of focus problem in the picture. Depending upon the type of camera and environment in which that camera is to be used, steadicam can be used in different modes or forms.

What is a SteadicamWhenever people think about steadicam, support systems always come to mind. Support systems are used by cameras for shooting locations or movie lots. These support systems are hydraulically controlled stands that are used in case of larger and more powerful cameras which help in exerting physical energy on the camera in turn making it steady. The example of larger stabilizing mounts may include the space which allows the operator behind the stand to focus lens and angle or the seating for the camera person. These larger steadicam helps in removing issues like rapid movement out of range or fuzzy focusing; and supports the camera to easily accommodate the action being filmed by providing the free movement to the camera.

These large supports used by larger cameras mainly functions as enhanced tripods. But to employ with smaller cameras, many harness versions of steadicam are also available. Steadicam harnesses are used by the camera operators who work in news department and have to film an interview or any other event occurring outside the television studio. Steadicam harness carries the maximum weight of the camera due to which a person feel less fatigue in the muscles of arms. The harness grips around the shoulders and torso, which provides a secure environment to a camera and helps to keep camera steady. Therefore, a camera man is able to shot the remote event sharply.

Hence, for professionals steadicam can prove to be very useful either for a movie camera production or for an event shooting in public. Steadicam harnesses can also be used in homes which help in improving the quality of a picture to a great extent. These harnesses are easily available at camera shops or through retailers.
