What Is Biometrics?
Biometrics is a new identification technique. In technique of biometrics different people are identified and distinguished on the basic of their specific biological properties. So it’s a technique of issuing biological identity cards to each and every individual. In modern world each and every body is known by his specific identity proof. But as technologies are developing day by day, so it’s not a tedious thing to create or copy an identity proof of a person. This false identity proof then can be used for some un-civilized purposes like stealing confidential information etc. So it’s important to develop an efficient system of providing a specific identity proof to each and every person. This identity proof should be highly specific for a specific person. Biometrics is a technique of creating such biologically specific identity proofs.
Biometric ID
Specified identity proofs are very important in modern life. This fact can be well understood by considering following example.
Let us suppose Mr. John wants to check his E-mail account to see some confidential information. Now his internet server wants to confirm that it’s Mr. John who is requesting to check the account. Now if a username and password is a conformation measure, then there are chances that somebody else got the username and password of Mr. John, then that person will be able to crack that confidential information from Mr. John’s E-mail account. But in biometrics system of identification, confirmation measure is not a username or password but it’s the fingerprint impressions of Mr. John. Now E-mail of Mr. john will open only if Mr. John pushes his scanner with his thumb only and nobody else will be able to get access to his account. In the similar manner, a hand-recognition device mounted outside the building of Mr. John will allow only Mr. John to open his doors. Mr. John can set his commuter password as his voice, now his computer will get start only when Mr. John orders him in his own voice. Even with biometric techniques Mr. John will not needed to take any ID card with him to enter his office. His retina will be his entrance card. Retina scanners will allow only Mr. John to enter his cabin. From this example it’s clear that biometrics is a much more prominent and safe identification scenario as compared to current electronic mode of identifications.
Advantages of the biometrics
In technique of biometrics a person will not be required to carry some identification proof or ID card with him, he himself is his identity card. Biometric identity of a person can never be steeled or copied because person himself is his ID. Biometrics promise a safe and easy mode of security. In spite of all these benefits biometrics also has a disadvantage of lapse of personal privacy because to run a system of biometric security, all the biological information of a person is needed to be submitted to the concerning organization, company or government authority. And biological scanners will be able to track all of our movements and daily day behaviors. No doubt, biometrics is an efficient mode of security but question of lapse of privacy is needed to be entertained before its pervasion in daily day lives.
