What Is EVP?

The sounds and voices that appear on electronic recordings for no apparent reason are called EVPs or Electronic Voice Phenomena. People link these EVPs to paranormal activities which they say are caused due to communications from spirits, aliens, ghosts etc. Some say that they are caused due to improper recording technique or feedback which can be explained. The parapsychology community believes that EVPs are paranormal and discusses the topics related to them.

EVPAs Spiritualism aroused in early 1800s, the concept of these paranormal activities also attracted people. Through the persons known as mediums, the spiritualists believe that they can communicate with the “other side”. So in order to meet people’s demand a large industry of mediums arose in 19th century. Spiritualism also explained their paranormal experiences which included haunting and abductions by spirits or ghosts. Later, spiritualism turned into scientific study of paranormal activities and was called Parapsychology.

Konstantin Raudive was the person who studied EVP in 1960s and published many landmark works. Due to his achievements, some people even refer EVPs as “Raudive voices”. He concluded that these communications were from the dead and were generally short in form of a phrase or word.

EVPs are recorded in various ways by using multiple recorders and other techniques. These recordings are made as test-proof as possible. In some cases only white noise is recorded to hear signs of EVP while some people claim to record EVPs in songs, speeches etc. Radio waves also consist of EVP and it may also exist in static between television stations.

There are various explanations for EVP. Sometimes transposing voices, snippets of material and strange tricks of radio waves are often heard in professional studios. Pareidolia may also be the reason behind EVP which some people claim. Pareidolia is the ability to hear these voices even there is none. Some people identify the meaning in a random pattern or event which is called Apopheria.
