What Is Greenwich Meridian Time And How Was It Discovered?
Greenwich Meridian Time or Greenwich Mean Time (abbreviation GMT) marks the starting point of every time zone in the World. It is also known as Zulu Time. GMT is used as a base and every other region in the world sets its time in accordance with the GMT. Although it has been replaced by the Temps Universel Coordonné (Universal Coordinated Time or UTC); still GMT is more popular and it widely used as the correct time.
Greenwich is a small town in London, England and the longitude for the town is set at 0° 0′ 0″ but the Latitude is 51° 28′ 38″N. If someone wants to know the time in any part of the world, one only needs to know the GMT and the longitude of the place in question. Once must have seen lines crisscrossing a model globe. The lines with run from the north to the south are longitudes. A line represents an area of constant longitude. A difference of 15 degrees in the longitude translates into the difference of an hour in time.
