What Is Megapixel?

One Megapixel means one million pixels. This is a measure which is commonly used in digital cameras in order to express their resolution capabilities. Actually, a pixel is simply a small square of computer display; in fact it’s so small that it can be represented as a dot. The whole display screen is actually a grid of these tiny square dots. These dots can be easily viewed by using the magnifying glass. Clarity of the display screen depends upon the amount of pixel dots. More the dots more will be the clarity, because higher no. of the dots will create more refined image.

Resolution dependence of the images
megapixelIn case of digital cameras, megapixels are the measure of the picture quality. For example- a camera with 3.1 Megapixel specifications, will be able to click pictures with the specified resolution of 2048 x 1536, this is equal to the 3,145,728 pixels. So the final image of 3.1 MP will be generated from more then three million dots. Printers also measure the quality in dots per inch (DPI ). A printer having printing ability of only 300 DPI will not be able to print the full quality image of 3.1 MP pictures, because it will not be able to regenerate the details (fine) of the image. The printed image will be blurry and grainy by nature. So, to print good quality pictures, it should be conformed that used printer should have enough compatibility to the pixel quality of the picture.

Pixel classifications of the cameras
A camera with high megapixel abilities will be able to click extremely good quality pictures and large prints of these pictures can also be obtained by using suitable printer. But for those persons, who don’t wish to have any large digital images, can go for a camera of even 1.5 MP. This camera will be able to display clear enough images, on the computer screens. But these days various cameras of 3.2 MP and more are available in the market at very affordable prices.

Suitable choice of the camera
If somebody wants to print the images in sizes of 8×10, then electronics specialists recommend the cameras of 4-5 MP (resolution of 2500 x 2000). 3200 x 2400 resolutions will be enough for the prints of size 12×16; this resolution will be provided by a camera of 6 MP. Professional photographers use cameras of 11 MP and more, for excellent resolutions of the image. But only for computer visualizations, one should not invest on a camera of higher MPs, because cameras with less MP abilities will be enough to produce clear enough computer images.

Cost of the camera
Cost of a camera strongly depends upon the megapixel quality of the camera. But the particular category of the flash card and capacity of internal memory, also participate in deciding the cost of a camera. Large amount of the internal memory of the camera participates in increased flexibility and type of supporting flash card will decide the capacity of the camera.
