What Is Pulmonary Tuberculosis?
Pulmonary tuberculosis is normally known as T.B. It is a communicable disease. This disease is spread by bacteria known as mycobacterium
tuberculosis. A person when affected with this disease, tubercles of hard tissues grown inside his lungs. In 1882, a German scientist Robert Koch discovered the bacteria of this disease. These bacteria are rod shaped and about 1/7000 mm in length and 1/6000 mm in breadth. A patient who suffered from T.B. often gets aggressive attacks of cough. While coughing, the patient sprays sputum and small drops of water into the air around him. These water drops and sputum contain bacteria of this disease. The bacteria start flying in the air as the water drops and sputum get dry up. If somebody inhales the bacteria, he can also get infected. This disease can be transmitted to all the people, around the patient. A patient of T.B should be immediately admitted in the hospital as he can infect his family members or neighbours. With the help of x rays, we can detect this disease. For the prevention of this disease, a vaccine known as Bacillus Calmetteguenin (BCG) has been developed. Doctors give an injection of this vaccine to a new born child with in few days of his birth to protect him from this disease.
