What Is Super Over In IPL?
To understand this phrase and to get a good idea of what it means, the reader will have to know the basics of cricket and how a super over determines the outcome. In addition, it would probably be good to have some knowledge of what the IPL is.
First of all, an “over” in cricket is a series of six consecutive balls bowled. In Twenty20 cricket, each team bats a maximum of 20 overs. If the score is tied after each team has batted its 20 overs, the “super over” comes into play. This form of cricket was introduced just five years ago, officially. It was brought about by the apparent decrease in watching extended cricket matches. Organizers put together a Twenty20 form that would have a quicker pace and would hold audience interest.
Traditional forms of cricket have continued even with the popularity of this new form around the world. The first World Twenty20 was played in 2007. India defeated Pakistan (the Indian Premier League (IPL) is the most popular in the world).
Matches that stand at a tie score after both teams have 20 overs do not end in a draw now that super over rules have been brought in. Most fans of this classic game realize that the super over idea adds excitement to the match. This newer rule replaces a guideline called bowl out, which was used previously.
Here are the basics of a super over, used to determine the outcome of a tied match:
• The super over starts approximately five minutes after the regular time of the match is completed.
• Three batsmen and one bowler for each team
• Umpires select which end to bowl – teams bowl from same end
• Fielding restrictions are the same as last over of match
• Team batting second in regular match bats first in super over
• Loss of two wickets ends super over innings for a team
• Team scoring most runs in super over is the winner
• If super over score is tied, the team with the most sixes in regular match and super over is winner
• If this number is the same, the team with most boundaries is winner
The International Cricket Council will supervise the ICC World Twenty20 tournament in England this year. Many of the world’s best cricketers will journey to the U.K. to take part in the matches. Matches take place in early June. The super over idea may well come into play here, as it is similar to the so-called “sudden death” or “shootout” concept in games like U.S. football, hockey or worldwide football (soccer).
