Each form of wiring has a particular range of utilization of voltage, which is known as safety margin for the device. This range of operating voltage is known as voltage rating and its value is determined by research and experimentation. This test may clear the wire to carry high amount of voltage which depends on the factors like the use of wire and its construction. The voltage rating for household appliances are of few volts but the rating for MI cables is in the range of one thousand volts.

The government and other jurisdictions have set the standards for wiring in all sorts of devices and applications with the help of a voltage rating test that specifies the acceptable safety limits and the highest amount of voltage that can be used. Therefore, residential homes and public buildings should have electrical systems which have specific manufacturing standards and voltage rating. Also, the machinery used for production of goods and services utilizes the voltage rating for the wires which meets to the predefined standards. This ensures the long term functioning of the machine with all safety measures.
