When Was The City Of Venice Built?

Venice was once an independent nation which was founded when people belonging to the lagoon community in the area united themselves under one banner to protect themselves against the warring Germanic tribe of Lombards during the last decades of the 7th century. The people formed a republic and Orso Ipato was elected as the first leader. The Republic of Venice (le Repubblica di Venezia) fell in 1797 AD to the advancing armies of the French revolutionary Napoleon Bonaparte. Napoleon gifted the city to the Austrians who then ruled over the territory till the 1866, when Venice became a part of the Kingdom of Italy.
