When Was The Yankee Stadium Built?
The Yankee Stadium was first built during the 1920s and it was opened to the public on 18 April, 1923. The original stadium has undergone several renovations during its existence but in the first decade of the 21st century the stadium’s building had become old and it became risky to hold more matches in the stadium. On 23 November, 2008 the stadium hosted its last game. It was demolished and was erected again after that. The construction of the new went at a fast pace and the new Yankee Stadium was opened on 2 April, 2009. The stadium cost US $1.57 billion, of which almost half the amount was paid by the American taxpayers.
The criticisms that the old stadium was unsafe surfaced for the first time in the 1980s. The old stadium underwent renovations for the first time in 1974-75. The repair work shortened the playing field and the monuments were relegated to a specially built park outside the stadium. Serious discussions on what could be done didn’t begin before 2001. Then partial construction began in 2006 but it was only after the demolition of the old stadium that construction sailed ahead.
The new stadium spans an area of is 1074 square meters and it has a capacity of over 52,000 people. This area is approximately 500,000 square feet more than the old stadium, but it accommodates approximately 4,000 less people. Although the stadium is dedicated to baseball, the holding of non-playing activities is not uncommon. Almost everything from graduation ceremonies to religious gatherings have been held at the stadium on occasions.
