Where Is Auburn?

Auburn is the largest city in east Alabama and it is located in the Lee County, Alabama in the United States. The locals also call the city ‘the Loveliest Village on the Plains’ but the official use of this name is scarce.

The city first became the dwelling place of the Creeks (or Muscogee), a native Indian American tribes people. The Europeans began arriving in the area during the 17th century and the first settlers arrived in the 1830s. The city was incorporated in February, 1839 and it comprised an area of 5.2 square kilometers then. The American Civil War left the city deserted by its people. The people returned after the war but the city went into a prolonged depression. Auburn University was established in 1872 in the city. America’s entry into the Second World War ensured the influx of students coming to the city’s universities for technical training and also bringing wealth. The city is voted as one of the ten best places in the United Sates to live in.

The city’s population is about 45,000 and the Whites form the biggest ethnic group accounting for 78.05% of the city’s population. African Americans comprise 16.79% of the population and they are the second largest ethnic group. The city’s economy mainly centers on its university – Auburn University. More than 23,000 students study at the university. Auburn University is a research institution. Many Nobel Prize winners live in the city including Fredrick Chapman Robbins, who is a Nobel Laureate in Medicine.
