Where Is Duke University?

The Duke University is a private research university situated in Durham, North Carolina in the United States. The university was founded in the town of Trinity by Methodists and Quakers in 1838 but the institution moved to Durham in 1892. The university is among the best universities in the United States and its research budget is among the largest ten in the country.

The name of the university has been changed several times during its history. It was known as ‘Union Institute Academy’ in the beginning and then the name was changed to ‘Normal College’ and then ‘Trinity College’. The current name was adopted in 1924, when James Buchanan Duke, a tobacco industrialist donated heavily to the university and prompted the university authorities to rename the institution as the ‘Duke University’. The university was renamed after Washington Duke, the father of James Duke.
Duke UniversityThe campus is spread over 8,610 acres and is divided into four parts. The university has been trying hard to establish itself as a research institution. The undergraduate programs offered by the university are among the top ten in the United States and it is ranked the 14th best university in the world. The university has a faculty of around 2,800 and there are about 13,450 students enrolled in the university. The university has produced 42 Rhodes scholars. Besides that, the Duke University Press publishes about 120 books a year and 30 scholarly journals.
