Where Is Jamestown?

Jamestown is located on the Jamestown Island in the state of Virginia in the United States. The city was founded in 1607 and it is considered as the first English settlement on the continent. It paved the way for the English to conquer and then colonize the United States. It served as the capital of the British US from 1616 until 1699.

Jamestown2Early life was difficult was for the settlers. The natives continuously attacked the settlers and food was in short supply. According to an estimate 40% of the early settlers died in the first years. The city lost much of its strategic importance during the 18th century as settlers began to move out. During the American struggle for independence, Jamestown was regarded as ‘inconsequential’ by both the sides. The situation changed during the American Civil War. Fierce battles were fought between the warring factions over the city. This made the city ‘historically significant’ to the American government and it even launched an archeological expedition in 1994 to study the past of the city.

Modern Jamestown is at a few kilometers from the historic Jamestown, which has now been converted into a museum by the government. The National Park Service and the Colonial National Historical Park are the two organizations working together since 1941 to preserve the city.
