Where Is Lake Tahoe?
Lake Tahoe is situated in the Sierra Nevada Mountains, on the west of Carson City in the state of Nevada in the United States. It also borders the state of California. The lake is famous for the clarity of its waters. It is the largest Alpine lake in North America; its area is around 496 square kilometers. It is also the second deepest lake in the United States with an average depth 594 meters.

The lake was formed when the ice receded towards the poles during the end of the last Ice Age. The lake gets its water from 63 sources and the Truckee River is the only river it feeds with its water. Given the depth of the lake, earthquakes at the bottom of the lake can cause tsunamis with waves measuring 3-10 meters in height.
The people of a native American tribe, the Washoes, inhabited the area for a long time. The locals call the lake ‘Da’aw’. European expeditions began only in the 19th century. Recorded history shows that Lt. John C. Fremont was the first European to see the lake. The explorations continued and in 1862 the US Department of the Interior suggested its modern name ‘Tahoe’ but it was only in the 1945 that the name got official recognition. During the gold rush of the late 19th century, Lake Tahoe provided timber to the industry. That didn’t turn out well for the natural ecosystem. There are still dangers to the lake’s environment. Uncontrolled tourism, an excess of hotels etc along the lake’s border, the continuous usage of the lake as a dust bin for the city waste are some of the principal threats the lake faces.
