Where Is Rodanthe?

Rodanthe is an unincorporated community situated on Hatteras Island in Dare County, North Carolina, in the US. The community is famous for its celebrating ‘Old Christmas’ on 6th January each year instead of 25th December. The reason being that the original English settlers used the Julian calendar. Another attraction of Rodanthe is a beast called ‘Old Buck’. It is a mythical animal and the locals believe it appears on every Christmas.

The entire northern end of Hatteras Island was once known as Chicamacomico, but the postal service changed the name to Rodanthe in 1874. The explanation given was – Rodanthe is easier to spell. In the early 20th century, three were three villages in the Rodanthe area – North Rodanthe, South Rodanthe and Clark. The postal service once again assigned new names to the villages; only the name of the northernmost village was kept intact. The site is also associated with the American Civil War. The Confederates landed troops in 1861 on the northern end of the island in an attempt to re-capture Fort Clark and Fort Hatters.

There are no hotels in the area. However, there are a couple of inns there. For a tourist, house rental agencies often arrange houses which are available in plenty. Rodanthe is a small community so, most of the shops are seasonal and family owned. There is a Chicamacomico Lifesaving Station in Rodanthe. It is famous for having rescued 42 men from an English tanker, which had been hit by a torpedo.
