Where is the City of Homes?
It is a city in the county seat of Hampden County in Massachusetts in the United States. It is the third largest city in the state of Massachusetts. It was declared a city on 25 May, 1852 but on 30 June, 2004, the Massachusetts General Court granted the control of the city to the Springfield Finance Control Board because the administration of the city was found incapable of handling finances and the financial condition of the city was bleak.

Europeans began settling in the area from 1500s onwards. This had dramatic effects on the native local population. By the year 1635, according to an estimate, only 5000 Native Indians were left in the area. In the 1770s, after gaining independence from Britain, George Washington, the first president of the United States, selected Springfield as a site for the National Armory. This had a profound effect on the city’s future development. It helped the city industrialize.

Springfield is famous as the city which gave the world basketball. The city is spread over an area of 86 square kilometers and has a humid continental climate. White people make up around 56% of the population and about 21% of the people are African-Americans. Being a large city it is the hub of business activities in Massachusetts. It is ranked as the 24th most high-tech city in the United States. Approximately 14,000 IT professionals work there. Baystate Heath, a nonprofit organization, is the biggest single employer in the city. It employs over 10,000 employees.
