Who Invented Skateboarding?
Some people in America, whose identity cannot be ascertained, invented skateboarding. This doesn’t sound like an ideal answer but the truth is that there isn’t an ideal answer because nobody knows who invented the first skateboard. There are two popular theories to explain the origin of skate boarding:
(a)The first theory says the skate boarding was developed when some people removed the push bar of scooters leaving only the undercarriage. Thus skateboards were born.
(b)While, if the other theory is to be believed, the skateboards came into being when some youngsters, on finding that the winds were not favorable for sailing on a particular day, attached wheels to wooden boxes; hence, the skateboards were born.
It is difficult to ascertain which version is closer to reality. It is also possible that both the versions are true to some extent. But once invented, skateboarding quickly became the trend of its day amongst the youngsters.
Early skateboards were more like ‘adapted-for-to-be-used-on-the-ground’ versions of the boards, which were used in the sea. A major development came when Frank Nasworthy, invented ‘urethane’ wheels for the skateboards in 1972. Since then, new materials have been employed to produce skateboards.
Current boards are about eight inches in breadth and 30-32 inches in length and they are made of polyurethane. These boards are not only stronger but also lighter. There is also a Go Skateboarding Day to promote skateboarding and it is celebrated every year on the 21st of June.
