Why Do Elephants Have Trunks?
Today, the elephant is the biggest animal on the land. The weight of the elephant is up to 5 tons. The four legs of elephant are thick and short in size. The elephant can easily balance its weight with the help of these short legs. The two ivory tusks of elephant protrude outside from the upper jaw. These tusks are used as weapons for protection. The elephant has teeth inside its mouth for chewing food. Elephant is calm and peace loving animal, therefore it can be domesticated and trained more easily than other animals.
The elephants keep on moving about the forest in groups. There are about 10 to 50 elephants in a group. Normally the colour of the elephant is catechu with blackish shade. Some elephants are of white colour. These days the elephants are of two classes, Asiatic and African. Elephant cannot exist without trunk as it is the important organ. Trunk is an extension of the nose and upper lip. It is essential organ for elephant as it performs the functions of nose, lips and hands. There are about 40, 000 muscles in the trunk of elephant. Because of these muscles the trunk becomes strong and flexible. With the help of the trunk the elephant can lift large wooden poles. The tip of the trunk is just like a finger. Elephant can eat food and drink water with the help of its trunk. To take bath the elephant fills water in its trunk, curl it up and pours that over its back. Hence we can say that trunk is very useful for elephant. Elephants are very useful for us. They are used for carrying the wooden logs from one place to another in the forest. They also entertain us in the circus. They can live for 90 years.
