Why Do People Dance?

A lot of different ideas come up when we try to figure out why people dance. These ideas include celebration for various reasons, sharing recreation time with one person or a group of people, expression of ideas and so on.

Academic studies have discovered that many ethnic groups include dance in their regular activities as a way to keep communities and larger populations together.

People DanceStudents and teachers have discovered that it is possible to learn a lot about another culture and another part of the world by participating in its dance activities. Dances often reveal a lot about people and what they value in their culture.

Dancing is a good way to break through personal and cultural barriers. Dances have been created and preserved among some cultures for the purpose of bringing individuals closer within a community. But dancing may also serve to bring individuals closer from one culture to another.

Some organizations have established regular dance nights or programs that allow individuals to learn about their own heritage or about the country from which they came, if they emigrated to another part of the globe. This learning experience sometimes opens up other ways for people to gain a larger understanding of a once-forgotten place or way of life.

Dancing is also considered exercise and can be a great way to improve conditioning and coordination. Some styles of dancing are particularly vigorous and are goof for this purpose. Veteran dancers have also reported that regular dancing provides some great mental benefits as well. It does take concentration and study to perform some intricate dances, so this benefit may well be one of the most important.

Most societies include dancing as a way of introducing young people to each other and allow them to get to know each other better.

Dancing, therefore, may help societies keep younger generations within guidelines, not to mention helping populations survive by getting young people together within the community.

One of the words associated with dance is ritual. Many cultures have very specific times for dancing, both during the year and during the day. In addition, dancing is sometimes reserved for special occasions in a person’s life, such as weddings, coming of age, the start or end of a school year and the harvest season. Dancing at these times may provide several of the benefits already mentioned, with the main reason being the marking of a specific occasion. Some cultures include dancing as a regular part of funeral services – celebrating a person’s life.

Following from these reasons for dancing is the need for expression, separate from the culture or from the need for exercise. Dancing is an art form for many, just as painting, writing or singing is. Some individuals find that dancing is the best way for them to express joy, sorrow and other emotions. These emotions can be shown to audiences in theaters as a way of communicating.

While most people think of parties when they think of dancing, the enjoyment that the activity brings is just one of many benefits people seem to get from moving to music (or to the song they hear in their own heads).

I cannot believe this article didn’t include sex. Dancing has always been a way to attract mates. From birds to humans, shaking your tail feather has consistently been a way to entice sexual partners.

Why do people dance?

I was very shy to dance as a young boy..
Now that I’m a grown man, I’m dancing more and more.

Going to clubs is not enough for me..I therefore record myself on video..

Is a way of expression..
My body is in shape
I have more confidence
It helps improve my posture
I feel like a star when i get out
It improves my walking and movement
It makes me happy
Is fun
It makes me creative in other things like singing
Is joyful and is a way of worshiping god…Etc. Etc…

Dance is actually much less about attracting mates, or just for fun or, to reflect a culture, and much more about an actual physiological reaction we have to sound. Our inner ears, or our cochleas, are responsible for keep our balance by always sending a signal to the brain that we are up right. When we listen to music, a very interesting thing happens. The pressure from the sound pushes on the cochlea every so slightly, telling the body it is falling off balance.

When you move, you are actually catching your balance, but because you are aware that you are listening to music, our conscious minds interpret it as dancing, or moving with the music. Now everything beyond those very first simple impulses, like the dancing with the stars stuff, that’s just for fun. But all those motions they do in dancing originated from those very first physiological impulses.
