Why Do We Celebrate April The First As April Fool’s Day?
In the 15th century, the Julian calendar was in use in Europe. Then Pope Gregory XIII came up with his own calendar, which is known as the Georgian calendar. Georgian calendar is in use nowadays. There were nations like France who adopted it almost immediately but Britain and some other countries were reluctant. The Julian calendar would begin on April 1. So the French and the other people who had adopted the advanced calendar began to mock those who continued to celebrate the New Year on April 1 instead of January 1 and those who were mocked upon were called ‘April Fools’ by the proponents of new calendar. Later, although Britain adopted the Georgian calendar, the tradition still continues.
